From the author:

For those of you who may not know, this is my debut novel. I wrote this book during the pandemic after having what one might call a mid-life crisis (though I’m hoping I’m not quite to my mid-life yet…). Writing this book has absolutely changed my life. It felt like coming home to myself and embracing who I’d always been. For most of my life I may not have known that I was always meant to be an author, but as soon as I started writing…I knew, and it was the best feeling.

For this section, I thought I might give a few inside perspectives that most people don’t know. Either about me or the story itself. I hope those of you who are fans of the book enjoy this little Q&A section and for those of you who haven’t read the book yet, I hope this convinces you to do so. *wink*

First things first,

Why a Cinderella story?

Much to many people’s surprise, Cinderella is not my favorite fairytale. Not by a long shot. If we’re talking specifically fairytales, Twelve Dancing Princesses is actually my favorite, if we’re talking Disney fairytales, hands down - Beauty and the Beast.

I chose Cinderella for my debut novel, because it’s the one story I personally relate the most to. I too have an abusive past, I too struggle with anxiety, depression, and C-PTSD and I too am a ridiculous romantic. *sigh* Where I was at in my personal life allowed this story to simply flow from me. In one setting I had all 3 books mapped out in my mind and I knew that meant this was the story to run with.

Why the abuse scenes?

I put the trigger warning on the book for this reason, there are a few abuse scenes that are described in pretty explicit detail. So it begs the question, why? Especially when this book is geared toward the YA (young adult) audience.

The answer is simple. I needed this story. My younger self (even younger than 16) had already experienced worse than the descriptions this book contains. And far too often I think publishers are afraid to show the darker side of trauma.

If you know Cinderella’s story, you know she goes through a lot, but it’s never really shown or talked about. Ever After (the movie) probably did the best job in showing this and that also happens to be my favorite version of Cinderella.

I’m not afraid of the darker, harsher side of things, but my goal was to showcase the dark, the gritty, the hard to read and then pair it with the light, the love and the immensely hopeful.

When I was a little girl still reeling from the aftermath of my own abuse, I felt like the only one. I personally needed a book like this; one that didn’t shy away from the hard stuff, because I needed to feel seen and to understand better what had happened to me. So I wrote this book for my younger self, the self that needed a role model that she could relate to and see herself in. Domestic abuse scenes, hard as they are, would’ve helped me realize early on, when I needed it most, that I wasn’t alone.

Why a love triangle?

Out of all the Cinderella stories out there I noticed our heroine not only gets abused for much of her life, but she’s also sequestered away and when she finally meets a dashing man, she falls in love with him immediately and the rest is history… (Boring and unrealistic.) So, I not only wanted to give our girl some options, but I also wanted to give her love story a more realistic edge to it. (Plus, I personally LOVE the angst of a good love triangle. I’m absolutely addicted.)

My sticky love mess in this book was coined “the accidental love triangle” by a reader, which I thought was the absolutely PERFECT description for the love triangle I’ve written. This isn’t your typical there’s an obvious answer…because I wrote both men to be pretty great (definitely flawed, but both still lovable). I wanted to make it hard for the reader to choose who you want Evelyn to end up with.

If you’re anti-love triangle, I hear you, but read this first:

Plus that love triangle... perfection. THIS is how you write a love triangle. I love and adore both of them so much.. does she REALLY have to decide Brianne??” - Kayla, Goodreads Review

Why a trilogy?

I wanted to take this classic Cinderella tale and really amp up the fantasy side of things. I wanted more magic, more mystery, more love, more adventure and just simply…more of her story after she meets the Prince. So that’s why this turned into a trilogy immediately in my mind.

Each book goes through a new phase of Evelyn discovering herself and healing her past wounds, while at the same time she’s also dealing with brand new traumas and hard decisions.

This decision was incredibly intentional because trauma doesn’t come in just one form, and for most people you don’t have just one bout of trauma and then you’re done… New things in life happen, big things, small things, terrible things, great things. So books 2 and 3 take you out of the classic Cinderella tale and into a brand new story with a whole lot more fantasy, drama and romance.

I’m excited for you to go on this new Cinderella inspired Fantasy Adventure!

If you haven’t already, please leave a review on Amazon. As an indie author (meaning independent, not tied to a traditional publishing agency), leaving a review is the life or death of a book. The more reviews the better. Good or bad, 5 stars to 1 star…it doesn’t matter, it ALL helps. Even if all you leave is a one-liner like, “I loved this book!” or “Not my thing”, it ALL counts.

…AND it only takes a minute out of your day to do it. 🙌 I’ve even made it super easy (click the button below).

Reviews are the reason people pick up a book, because they’re the social proof it’s worth their time/money.

Think about the way you read books. Either a friend recommends them, an influencer of some sort says “I loved this!”, a publisher you love puts it in their newsletter, a Barnes and Noble stand has it on display, a magazine writes up an article or, if you’re like me, you scroll down and check out the reviews first to make sure the book description matches what readers are saying.
